What is lumen output?

A ‘lumen’ is a unit of measurement used to define the amount of visible light emitted from a source, like a lightbulb. The higher the lumen ouput, the brighter the bulb. There’s a long and complex explanation about how lumens are calculated here if you want more information. But to summarise: lumens are how bright a light is.

‘what has lumen output got to do with me?’

The answer: quite a lot.

a single lightbulb glows softly

The brightness of the lights at your home or place of work can have a big impact on your eyes. Dull lights can cause eye strain and headaches as the eyes are forced to work much harder. They can make you drowsy and decrease motivation.

If natural light is not an option for the space available, or because it’s night time, then bright (but not harsh) lights are important for a positive work force or home environment.

Why is an LED’s lumen output better than halogen?

Before LEDs and improved lighting technology, in order to increase the brightness of the lights you’re using you would need to increase the wattage (power) used. Now, with LEDs you can achieve the same lumen output with a much lower wattage; brighter and cheaper!

Halogen downlights also dull over time and lumen output deteriorates quite quickly.  LED lumen output remains strong for much longer.
