Should you purchase a solar battery yet?

One of our most frequently asked questions by customers enquiring about solar products is ‘should I add a battery to my solar power unit?’

With the incredible amounts of publicity the Tesla Powerwall received throughout 2016 and 2017 and the fantastic publicity the brand has received with a fast installation time for South Australia’s new solar battery farm and the world’s largest lithium-ion battery storage; Tesla is on the tips of many customers’ tongues when enquiring about a solar energy system.

Solar batteries are great, aren’t they?

And obviously the concept of a battery is fantastic; create energy with your solar energy system during peak sunshine hours of the day while you’re out of the house and not using it and charge your battery so when you’re home at night and your energy demands peak your battery can supply the energy instead of using grid energy. Or, your battery can kick in during a pesky blackout and you can be the resident on the street that keeps their air-con running and the neighbours green with envy.

And whilst it’s 2018 and batteries have been around for some time, the numbers still aren’t quite there in terms of return on investment.

“At the moment, a Tesla Powerwall battery system will cost you around $12,000 to install and will take about 15 years to pay back. The unit is [only] warranted to last 10 years.” source

We have also had enquiries from customers who have heard these opinions and done the math and decided they will wait for batteries to decrease in price (like solar and LEDs did as market demand increased and brought down prices). But this just means you’re losing out on the benefits a solar panel system can provide in the meantime.

Did you know you can add a battery later?

That’s right – you don’t have to install a battery straight away. You can add a battery, or batteries, later down the line. We can install a solar energy system that has the option to add a battery when you’re ready; whether that’s when you’ve saved up the money, batteries have come down in price or when you’re ready to reinvest in your solar energy system.

Get in touch and we can help you decide if you should install a battery with your solar energy system or if it would be better to wait…
