Your questions answered

Our most frequently asked questions

Why are they free?

The Victorian Government’s Energy Saver Incentive scheme (also known as the Victorian Energy Efficiency Target) encourages households and businesses to use energy more efficiently, save money on their bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As a participant in the scheme since 2009, Energy Makeovers can create Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates (‘VEECs’) when we replace your power hungry halogen downlights with approved energy saving LED products. We then sell these Energy Efficiency Certificates to energy retailers, which subsidises the cost of your LED downlight upgrade, enabling us to offer free LEDs!* All that’s required is for you to sign our VEEC assignment form at the end of the installation to allow us to create the VEECs.

Are they 100% free?

Our LED downlights upgrade service includes: booking your appointment with one of our A-grade certified electricians to suit your schedule, removing your existing halogen downlights, and supply and install of our quality MR16 (12V) LED lights. Note that we can only replace the LED downlights for free where we are replacing existing halogen downlights, and a non-refundable call out fee of $99 per booking will be applied for a MR16/ 12V lighting upgrade.

What areas do you service?

Our electricians currently service the Greater Melbourne and Geelong areas and we are constantly expanding our service area to be able to deliver to Victorians across the state. If you live outside this area, we will save your details in our waiting list for us to contact once we have an electrician to bring the service to you.

Is the LED light as bright as my halogen downlights?

Let’s get technical: 50W halogen downlights in the ceiling typically output 500 or more lumens (brightness) with a beam angle of around 60 degrees. Inferior LED downlights tend to output between 200 and 400 lumens, with a beam angle of just 30-35 degrees, resulting in dim and uneven light. Our commitment to ensuring quality means our 7W LED downlights output a minimum of 500 lumens with a wide 65 degree beam angle, resulting in equal or improved lighting in your home.

Can they be dimmed?

If you have dimmable GU10s in place then these can be upgraded to dimmable GU10 LEDs under the upgrade offer. The MR16 (12V) downlight which is supplied with our free upgrade offer cannot be used with a dimmer. If you have dimmable MR16s, you can either disconnect your dimmer (for a small fee), if you do not use it, or we recommend upgrading to our affordable GU10 LED downlights, that are compatible with most existing dimmer switches.

How long do they last?

Our LED downlights are incredibly long lasting, and are rated to last up to 50,000 hours. In comparison, typical halogen lights will fail within 2,000 hours (that’s typically 12-15 months). No more climbing up the ladder every few months!

What's the difference between MR16 (12V) LEDs and GU10 (240V) LED downlights?

The LED downlights we supply and install as part of our free LED offer are MR16 (12V) LED downlights, which are compatible with most existing transformers in your ceiling and therefore only requires the light bulb to be replaced. We also offer affordable, premium quality GU10 (240V) LED downlights, which run on mains voltage and therefore allow our electrician to completely remove your old transformers in the ceiling when replacing your downlights.

Who does the lighting upgrade?

Energy Makeovers uses certified A-grade electricians to conduct the LED downlight upgrade, meaning a safe, professional service for our customers.

Do I have to have them upgraded all at the same time?

You can upgrade as many downlights as you like (a non-refundable call out fee of $99 per booking will be charged). We recommend that you upgrade all the lights in each room at the same time to avoid having both halogens and LEDs in the same room and of course, why not take advantage of this limited-time opportunity for free LEDs while it lasts?

How much am I saving?

Can I keep the existing halogen downlights that you remove?

Energy Makeovers will decommission all halogen lamps and transformers that are removed in the process of replacing with our LED lights, to ensure that these are recycled without harming the environment and to comply with the Victorian Government’s Energy Saver Incentive scheme.

Can I use my own electrician?

Energy Makeovers carefully recruits, trains and deploys certified A-grade electricians to conduct the LED downlight upgrade to ensure the highest standards of workmanship and professional attention to detail and customer service. Our LED upgrade service is exclusively delivered by these specialists.

What happens if my transformers are not compatible?

If your transformers are not compatible with our LED downlights, the electrician will not be able to complete your upgrade. A call-out-fee is non-refundable if transformers are not compatible. The electrician will discuss this with you and you can call our Energy Saving Team to discuss your options at 1300 788 776
